YEAR TWO

THERE WAS A DRAGON IN OUR PLAYGROUND

by Imogen 2S

One day a dragon was in the playground.  She had pink and green on her body and yellow wings.  She had a bright yellow star on her tail.  She burnt all of the playthings.  She was so happy that her tail was wriggly.  She jumped so much that she made a hole in the ground.  Then I cam out and I saw its wings move.  After that it flew into the sky.

HOW DOES A BIKE WORK

by Luke 1/2G

Lots of people use bicycles as transport.  Bicycles don't need petrol.  They are powered by a person.

A bicycle needs two wheels which are connected to the chain and the chain is connected to the pedals which the person pushes with their feet.  Some bicycles have gears which make it easier to get up and down hills.

Bicycle riding is a better option than driving a car because it keeps you fit and saves the planet.

YEAR THREE

The Story of Ned Kelly

by Hamish 2/3G

Ned Kelly’s life started just north of Melbourne in 1854. After his dad, ‘Red Kelly died, Ned Kelly went to jail at the age of 16.  The police had no proof of what he did. Ned Kelly was no longer in jail. The Kelly family moved to Stringybark Creek. The police were harassing them. Ned was angry. He got a Kelly gang and started hiding. One of the gang members knew the police were going to attack so he told Ned. Ned was ready for the police to attack. The Kelly gang re-railed the railways track. They lit a candle behind a red cloth. When the train stopped, the hostage came out, saw the candle behind the cloth and ran away. Now the Ned Kelly gang were outlaws. People put up posters about bringing Ned Kelly to court dead or alive. Ned Kelly snuck up behind a policeman and shot him. Another policeman came up and shot Ned Kelly in the wrist and in the leg. Ned Kelly collapsed. Ned went to court and got sentenced to be hanged. He was hanged and that was the end of Ned Kelly.

THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT

A story by Lottie Year 3

A long, long time ago, I was in my bedroom.  It was almost midnight and I was nearly asleep. It was stormy out the window. I was slowly moving under the covers as the rain pitter-pattered on the roof. Suddenly I heard a CRASH of thunder and an enormous SCREECH. My blood was pumping and my heart was pounding. The room became darker so I looked out my window. An alien was staring straight at me! It had wings with razor sharp claws on the tips and pointy teeth in its mouth. I was terrified. When I woke up in the morning, I realised the alien was just a bat. I felt so relieved.

WHY IS AUSTRALIA DAY ON JANUARY 26TH?

by Victoria 3M

Australia Day is on the 26th January.  It is a special day because it is Australia’s birthday.  A public holiday celebrates Australia Day.

Australia Day is celebrated all over Australia – from the outback, to the beach, in the cities and even in my own backyard.  On Australia Day there are fun activities and fireworks.

Two hundred and twenty years ago in 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip brought the First Fleet to Australia.  There were 1 500 convicts on eleven ships making up the new colony.   On the 26th of January, Governor Arthur Phillip and his men, hoisted the British flag at Sydney Cove.

On Australia Day, you might hear or sing the national anthem and you might see lots of flags.  It’s a great day to become a new Australian citizen,  It’s a day of celebration for us, but the aborigines don’t like Australia Day because it’s when other people came and took their land.  They call it Invasion Day.

YEAR FOUR

AN EXPLANATION OF AUSTRALIA DAY

by Katelyn 4L

The Australia Day that you know means BBQs, fireworks and friends and family, but what is the true meaning?  Well on the 25th January, 1788, Captain Arthur Philip raised the British flag at Sydney Cove.  Australia Day was originally called Foundation Day.

So I guess you're wondering what people do on Australia Day.  Well the Australian of the Year is announced.  People are nominated for things they have done like sports, science and arts.  While other people become Australian citizens or recognise our heroes or just look on how far Australia has come.  Well to be true, I don't do any of that stuff.  I just sit back, relax and have a barbie.

Maybe some people might have a BBQ or go to see the fireworks, or go to the beach or just be with family and friends.  Your council might put on a fete with rides and stalls and lots and lots of food.  Or you could also go to the beach with nice warm water and soft squishy sand.  I'd definitely do that.

On Australia Day I normally watch the footy with my Dad and have a BBQ, or go to the beach and celebrate there.  But most of the time I just have lunch with family and friends.

So whatever you do or wherever you go on Australia Day, it's still Australia Day, (even if your brother is still in bed).

RAINY POEM

by James 4E

When I'm sitting next to the window right against the pane,

It's often when I'm really bored and watching the pouring rain,

I watch it pour heavily down like a waterfall,

When it hits the soggy ground it like the grass is having a ball.

UMBRELLA

by Maddi Fr 4E

Umbrella, umbrella, where have you been?

I've been here and there, you were not seen,

Now that I've found you,

let's go for a walk,

now let's talk.

MY BROTHER

by Gemma 4E

He is a busy bee just dobbing on me

He is a cyclone tearing around me,

He is an ice-block melting in a puddle,

He is a tidal wave soaking the house,

He is an ice-cream party,

Okay - until we have to stop!

YEAR FIVE

ANIMALS SHOULD BE KEPT AS PETS

A discussion by Cassandra 5W

First I'll state my points why animals shouldn't be kept as pets.

Animals shouldn't be kept as pets because some animals like cats can ruin your house and furniture.  Another reason why animals shouldn't be kept as pets is because some animals like snakes can camouflage themselves and if you don't see it, the snake can bite you.

Some people say that certain animals shouldn't be kept as pets because certain animals like cats can stain some of your furniture and it could take about twenty washes to make the smell go away.  Another reason why animals shouldn't be kept as pets is because, say you found an animal that was a baby and started feeding it and then sometime later were told not to go near it and left it alone, it wouldn't know how to survive or hunt by itself and would probably die.

In this next section I am going to talk about why animals should be kept as pets.

Animals should be kept as pets because they give a lot of company to people who live alone.  Another reason why animals should be kept as pets is because sometimes animals go to hospital to visit people who might hurt or sick and they make them feel very relaxed and calm.  Some people say that animals should be kept as pets because if you are bored you can play with them.  Also, when you feel very upset they can comfort you.  Also I have here votes of the 21 out of 30 people in my class who think animals should be kept as pets.  So you can see keeping animals has won.

I think animals should be kept as pets because they are comforting, helpful and playful.

SHOULD UNHEALTHY FOODS BE BANNED FROM SCHOOLS?

Lauren B 5W writes convincingly

Unhealthy food is why most kids and adults are overweight.  When you grow up and you're an adult, most people's weight affects their jobs and their life.  People buy unhealthy food because unfortunately, unhealthy foods, for example chops lollies and chocolate, are better tasting than healthy food.  These things are O.K. if you eat them occasionally, but if you eat them every day you may get sick or find you can't fit into your new jeans.

Unhealthy food is supposed to be used as a treat, nut unfortunately people become addicted to the stuff like cigarettes and all they eat is junk food.  People who keep doing this have got to stop and try to eat healthy food.

Kids are the start of the problem as most kids love junk food.  It would be best if we stop the kids from eating too much junk food now so when they become adults, they'll have a better life.

In this section I am going to tell you about why unhealthy foods shouldn't be banned.  Unhealthy food is a treat for everyone and shouldn't be banned because no-one can ever stop people from eating unhealthy food.  People have unhealthy food for parties and welcomings and without unhealthy food the party will be a disaster.

I did a survey of 5W and most kids put up their hands for the against side but you can see if they become unfit they won't be able to do all the things that kids will want to do because their body can't take it.

YEAR SIX

  THE ARACHNID AND THE MOLLUSC

One day in a lovely schoolyard there were two bugs in a little bug city. The bugs were a spider called Leo and a snail called Cassie. They lived in a small house since they were a small family and weren’t very rich.

They live next door to a wealthy family who weren’t very nice. There were heaps of kids who were all spiders. The family travelled every day over the hills to get food and water where as the wealthy family had a slave who did it for them. The Shellie family felt sorry for the slaves. The families had a big river right behind their house. It was a metre wide and wet behind all the houses from the village.

Every bug liked the river because it stops the other village across the river who were the enemy. But the river was starting to go down due to drought. Now the enemy every week comes over across the river and steals food supplies. The village had to stop the enemy by making water or filling up the river.

Cassie and Leo were discussing how they could get water. Cassie thought of doing the rain dance. The rain dance sent water from the sky. So the Shellie family asked for a village meeting. A village meeting is where everyone in the village comes together and discusses something. The Shellie family discussed the rain dance ad everyone agreed to it.

Two days later everyone came together to do the rain dance. Rain poured for days and days. The river was filled and so was the dam, and the village lived happily for a long time.
